Spray Foam Insulation Safety
Spray foam is a very effective and increasingly popular insulation material. It can offer many important and valuable benefits to property owners. As with many other types of chemical substances, however, it must be handled with care by those who are applying it. There are a number of critical safety measures and precautions that must be followed by spray foam insulation professionals.
These resources can help spray foam insulation contractors educate themselves and their workers about the health and safety risks of spray foam jobs, and how to protect yourself so you can avoid harmful situations.
OSHA’s NEP program
OSHA introduced their National Emphasis Program (NEP) for isocyanates in 2013. Isocyanates are a type of highly reactive chemicals that are used in a variety of fibers, foams and coatings—including spray foam substances. The NEP outlines a number of procedures, regulations and recommendations for employees working with spray foam.
Respiratory protection plan
A written respiratory protection plan is a valuable tool in helping to keep workers safe. It is also a requirement specified in the NEP from OSHA. The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance has created a helpful resource on this topic, entitled, “Guidance for Developing a Written Respiratory Protection Program.”
EPA contractor checklist
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has created a contractor checklist to serve as a guide for safer workplace practices involving spray form. Review and print the checklist here.
SPF safety site from the American Chemistry Council
This spray polyurethane foam health & safety site — sponsored by the American Chemistry Council—serves as a comprehensive source of resources and information related to SPF safety issues, with specific sections geared toward contractors and homeowners.
